NTB forms taskforce to revive tourism sector

KATHMANDU: Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has formed a high-level taskforce for the revival of the tourism industry that has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A meeting held at NTB on Monday formed the taskforce which will be coordinated by NTB Chief Executive Director Dhananjay Regmi and comprise of the heads of six different associations of tourism entrepreneurs. Similarly, former CEO of NTB Deepak Raj Joshi and Rajan Pokhrel, director general of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) have also been appointed to the task-force.

Meanwhile, senior tourism entrepreneurs will be included as experts in the taskforce. The expert team includes Chairperson of Hotel Dwarika Ambica Shrestha, President of Temple Tiger Group Basanta Mishra, Managing Director of Buddha Air Birendra Basnet, former CEO of NTB Prachanda Man Shrestha and Executive Director of Yeti Airlines Sonam Sherpa.

The taskforce has been directed to analyze the current status of the industry and prepare a report with recommendations on how the industry can be revived from the impact of the pandemic. The recommendations must include the things that need to be done and the ways to do them. The suggestions must also address the issues of each and every worker and entrepreneur and companies that are involved in the tourism sector directly or indirectly.

Moreover, the taskforce has also been directed to focus on developing a strategy to motivate entrepreneurs who have been demoralized by the current situation when preparing the report.

Recently, NTB had conducted an impact assessment of the tourism industry. Besides the government’s relief package the tourism board has formed this taskforce with an aim to provide relief to the affected industry immediately and to implement strategies for long-term development.

NTB has also launched a job retention program for trekking workers.
