Toursim Ministry receives 713 proposals for joint infrastructure development

KATHMANDU: Under the Tourism Infrastructure Construction and Tourist Product Development Joint Project Framework 2020, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) have received 713 proposals from several provincial and local governments.

Based on the framework, MoCTCA had sought proposals from provincial and local governments for tourism infrastructure development through joint investment of the federal, provincial, and local governments.

According to the ministry, it has so far received 10 proposals from provincial governments, nine from metropolitan cities, 10 from sub-metropolitan cities, 307from municipalities and 377 from rural municipalities.

The ministry will approve only the selected proposals from among all the proposals that it has received. In such projects, rural municipalities have to bear 30 percent of the total investment, municipalities have to fork out 35 percent, sub-metropolitan cities need to chip in 40 percent while metropolitan cities and provincial governments will have to invest 50 percent of the total investment while the remaining investment will be provided by MoCTCA.

The MoCTCA will be providing from Rs 100 million to Rs300 million per project.

After the 100 Tourist Destinations project initiated by the government did not take off, the ministry had introduced this strategy to complete those projects. Aiming at promoting and preserving tourist destinations the government had selected 100 destinations across the country.

The ministry had also allocated budget for the destinations, however, the local governments didn’t take up their responsibility seriously and the work has remained as it is. Thus, the ministry had brought this joint investment strategy for destination development and promotion.
