Construction of Solu Corridor transmission line project to gain momentum

KATHMANDU: The construction work of the Solu Corridor project, a double-circuit transmission line of 132 kV, which has been halted for the last two years, is likely to gain momentum from this year.

The construction work of the project had been stopped by the locals of Katari Municipality-4 of Udayapurwho were seeking compensation for the public land that the project would be using. The locals also wanted the project authorities to relocate the transmission tower from the earlier proposed site.

Addressing a discussion program with officials of the municipality on Tuesday, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Barshaman Pun, agreed to pay compensation for the land. Following this, representatives of the municipality including federal parliament member Suresh Kumar Rai, Chief of Katari Municipality

Gyanendra Shrestha, Head of Municipality-4, Krishna Raj Danuwar and Head of Solu Corridor Project Janardan Gautam, assured to end the obstruction in the construction of the transmission project.

The consumers of the municipality’s Green Community Forest at Maruwa had been obstructing the project stating that the transmission line lies on the ‘right of way’ on their public land.

Citing that the government is in favor of working on development projects by addressing the legitimate interests of the people, Minister Pun said no one should obstruct development works. He further added that the local level government and public representatives should facilitate development works.

“My long-standing effort to move the project forward has now paid off. I am satisfied with it,” said Pun.

The parliamentary member Rai said that the problems of the locals have been solved. He assured that they will now end the obstruction in coordination with the affected locals, local government, public representatives and the project.

Because of the delay in construction of the transmission line, all the electricity production of Solu Khola Hydropower except 4.5 MW out of 23 MW has been turning wasted since last February.
