400 kVA Dhalkabar substation to start operation from Monday

KATHMANDU: Country’s largest capacity Dhalkabar substation is coming in operation in full swing from Monday.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to inauguarate the project on Monday morning.

This substation is the largest in operation and is also automated with GIS technology. All tests have been completed by charging the power transformer in addition to the 315 MVA attached to the substation since last December.

According per Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), currently two 160 MVA and 315 MVA 635 MVA transformers are connected in Dhalkebar. Similarly, substations with a total capacity of 400/220 kV have three 315 MVA capacity and 945 MVA capacity power transformers, which can deliver around 900 MW of power.

The Dhalkabar substation has become a major hub for East-West power supply and electricity trade with India within the country. After the substation is charged, the infrastructure for import and export of about one thousand megawatts of electricity between Nepal and India has been prepared. In addition, the power of the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydroelectric Project will be able to flow easily into the national transmission system and the non-consumable power in the country can be exported to India.
