Cane farmers’ unresolved plight brings them to street yet again

KATHMANDU: Cane farmers have once again staged a protest in Kathmandu after the sugar factories failed to clear their dues.

According to the farmers, they are yet to receive around 300 million rupees from sugar factories.

These farmers have been staging protests and demanding clearance of their dues time and again.

According to the Sugarcane Farmers Struggle Committee, Indira Sugar Mill is yet to pay Rs 30 million, Lumbini Sugar Mill Rs 30 million, Annapurna Sugar Mill Rs 120 million and Mahakali Sugar Mill Rs 90 million to the farmers. “Likewise, even if Shree Ram Sugar Mill has handed over Rs 30 million to be paid to farmers to the Chief District Officer of Sarlahi, the amount has not been distributed to the farmers yet.”

Earlier on January 3, 2020, the agitating farmers, sugar factories and the government had reached an agreement to clear the dues as soon as possible. However, the farmers are yet to receive full payment of the sugarcane they had sold to the factories.
