Govt set to allow private sector trade electricity, proposal being tabled at the Cabinet

KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to allow private sector trade electricity. Implementation of this plan will end the monopoly of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in electricity trade.

Sources at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation informed that the government is positive towards allowing the private sector to trade electricity and that the Ministry is preparing to table a proposal at the Cabinet to this effect soon.

“Now, the private sector should come with a foundation to prove that they will be able to sell an amount of electricity in a certain way,” Energy Minister Pampha Bhusal said, addressing a recent event organised by the Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN), “We are ready to give a licence to both companies and individuals.”
