Govt starts GPS tracking of public vehicles

KATHMANDU: The government has started GPS tracking of public vehicles from Sunday onwards.

As a pilot project, the Department of Transport Management is installing tracking devices on 100 public vehicles now. As per the department, not all public vehicles will be tracked immediately.

On the first day of the installation on Sunday, 17 buses operating on Kathmandu-Pokhara, Kathmandu-Birgunj and Kathmandu-Bardibas-Janakpur have been installed with the technology, according to the department chief Namaraj Ghimire.

Ghimire says the government will expand the facility for all the public vehicles soon so that they can be monitored, controlled and managed together.

As GPS tracking will help in speed control also, the department hopes it will be crucial to reduce traffic accidents.
