Govt form ‘expert group’ to gather suggestions for Nijgadh Airport

KATHMANDU: The government has formed an expert group to give suggestions on construction of the proposed Nijgadh International Airport in Bara.

Pradeep Adhikari, Director General of Nepal Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), informed that an expert group has been formed under the coordination of former Director General of CAAN Birendra Deuja.

The expert group has been formed following decision of the Cabinet meeting held on Friday.

The expert group include, former finance secretary Rameshwar Khanal and Surya Raj Acharya and the committee has been mandated its suggestion report in 30 days.

Adhikari further informed that the committee includes experts from environment, development, economy and aviation sector.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered the government to cancel all the previous procedures initiated for the construction of Nijgadh Airport and proceed based on the recommendations of the expert group. Accordingly, the government has formed such a group.

The process of building world-class standard airport at Nijgadh started in 2051 BS. However, the project has not proceed ahead due to several hurdles.
