Japan helping Nepal rehabilitate oldest irrigation system with Rs 2 bln grant

KATHMANDU: Japan has committed to helping Nepal rehabilitate its oldest irrigation system with the grant support of Rs two billion.

Officials of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nepal and the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday signed an agreement in this regard, in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

“The objective of the project is to achieve appropriate water distribution in Chandra Nahar Irrigation Scheme by rehabilitating irrigation facilities, thereby contributing to increasing agricultural production in the eastern Terai region,” JICA Nepal says in a statement, “The project will be supporting the rehabilitation of the existing facilities in the target area and keeping the system sustainable through capacity development for management and supervision regarding rehabilitated facilities.”

Meanwhile, the officials also signed another agreement, according to which Japan will provide Rs 14 billion in a concessional loan to improve the transmission and distribution system in urban areas of Nepal by developing and/or upgrading the existing transmission and /or distribution system, including grid substation and related equipment.
