EU’s on-site assessment team won’t be visiting Nepal any time soon

KATHMANDU: The team from the European Union (EU) that was going to Nepal to conduct a “on-site study” of aviation safety has postponed their trip.

The planned visit of the EU technical team has been temporarily postponed, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).

In a joint statement issued on Friday, CAAN Director-General Pradeep Adhikari and EU Ambassador to Nepal Nona Deprez stated that the on-site evaluation team’s scheduled visit to Nepal has been postponed for the time being.

According to CAAN Spokesperson Jagannath Niraula, the EU’s visit to Nepal has been postponed by mutual agreement because the CAAN’s human resources must be deployed for the task of the probe commision formed to investigate the crash of the Yeti Airlines plane in Pokhara on January 15.

Earlier this year, in October, an EU team conducted a study on Nepal’s aviation safety and concluded that significant progress had been made in air safety.

The team returned with the decision to send another team to conduct an on-site evaluation of Nepal’s aviation safety.

The EU clarified in the statement that it would continue to support Nepal in the area of aviation safety. Nepal has been on the EU’s air safety list since 2013. Nepal has made numerous attempts to be removed from the list.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Nepal’s aviation safety compliance rate is 70.1 percent.
