China’s renewed commitment to running the Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong crossing in both directions

KATHMANDU: China has pledged to open the Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong border crossing once more. The trade at the northern border crossings is constantly being interrupted as a result of China’s zero-covid-19 policy following covid-19.

However, China reaffirmed its commitment to operating the Kyirong crossing in a two-way fashion at the Wednesday meeting of the Nepal-China border trade and cooperation coordination mechanism held in Lhasa.

After the meeting, the Nepali Consulate General in Lhasa issued a press release stating that China would be fully operational for two-way trade at the border as of Chait 18 (next Saturday).

Also, this time it is going to be fully operated for two-way movement of people. For the first time after the covid-19, China is going to open two-way for the movement of people.

The border will be opened, as China has pledged numerous times. China promised to open the border, but has been unable to do so.

China announced last year that it would run the Kerung border crossing during the visits of the then-foreign minister of China, Wang Yi, to Nepal, the then-foreign minister of Nepal, Narayan Khadka, to China, and the president of the National People’s Congress of China, Chang Su, to Nepal.

But to date, nothing like that has occurred. It was also decided to open the Lhasa border on Wednesday.

Additionally, China has promised the Nepali side that it will permit two-way trade and human movement at the Tatopani border crossing beginning on May 18.

Madhukumar Marasini, secretary of the Nepalese Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supply, and Chen Yongchi, executive vice president of the People’s Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region, headed their respective teams at the first meeting of the mechanism for coordination of border trade and cooperation between China and Nepal.

The Chinese side of the meeting has expressed support for the construction of a multipurpose laboratory near the Nepal-China border.

The discussion covered topics like beginning cross-border trade and human movement, efficient port operation, trade facilitation, cooperation in customs, development of border areas, and infrastructure related to trade.
