Everest base camp buzzes with global climbers as Kami Rita Sherpa eyes 31st summit

KATHMANDU: Renowned mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa, who holds the world record for 30 Everest summits, has arrived at Everest Base Camp to attempt his 31st ascent, aiming to break his own record. The base camp, located at 5,364 meters above sea level, is bustling with over 1,300 climbers, guides, and support staff from 53 countries, creating a vibrant, village-like atmosphere adorned with over 500 colorful tents.

The Tourism Department reports that 402 climbers, including 74 women, have secured permits for Everest this spring season, contributing NPR 684 million in royalties. The base camp, equipped with amenities like a laundry, café, and bar, has drawn global attention through viral social media posts showcasing its scenic beauty and lively environment, boosting Nepal’s adventure tourism.

The route from the base camp to Camp III is now open, with a Sherpa team fixing ropes toward the summit. The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee has prepared the path up to Camp II, and the summit route is expected to be ready within 10 days, weather permitting. Eight K Expeditions is overseeing rope-fixing to the summit, with 90% of climbers already at the base camp.

Lakpa Sherpa, managing director of Eight K Expeditions, described the base camp as a “global village” with a festive vibe, while Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks noted that the influx of climbers is drawing worldwide focus. The Everest Climbers’ Association highlighted the season’s role in promoting Nepal’s adventure tourism.

Among the climbers, Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa aims to set a record by summiting Everest four times in 20 days. With over 8,000 climbers having conquered Everest in its 72-year history, the mountain continues to inspire records and rivalries despite its risks. The Tourism Department’s field office at the base camp is ensuring safe and regulated climbs.
