KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Ambassador to Spain, Shanil Nepal, formally presented his credentials to Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism), during a ceremony at the organization’s headquarters in Madrid on Monday. The event marked a significant step in strengthening ties between Nepal and UN Tourism, with both sides expressing enthusiasm for deeper collaboration.
Following the presentation, Ambassador Nepal held a cordial meeting with Secretary-General Pololikashvili. Conveying warm greetings from Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Nepal extended an invitation to the Secretary-General to visit Nepal at a mutually convenient time. The invitation underscored Nepal’s commitment to fostering closer engagement with global tourism bodies.
Secretary-General Pololikashvili congratulated Nepal for its remarkable achievement in 2024, welcoming a record number of international tourists and fully recovering to pre-pandemic levels. He praised Nepal’s efforts in revitalizing its tourism sector and its significant contributions to the global tourism industry, noting the country’s resilience and strategic initiatives.
Ambassador Nepal emphasized Nepal’s focus on diversifying its tourism portfolio, highlighting the promotion of spiritual and cultural heritage alongside the country’s rich biodiversity. He proposed Nepal as a potential host for future high-level UN Tourism summits and conferences, a suggestion that Pololikashvili welcomed, expressing keen interest in exploring the idea further. The discussions also covered expanding collaboration between the Embassy of Nepal and UN Tourism.
