Kirtipur Cricket Stadium listed as national priority project, Rs 10 bn investment planned

KATHMANDU: The government has officially listed the Kirtipur-based cricket stadium as a National Priority Project, signaling a major policy push to upgrade Nepal’s cricket infrastructure to international standards.

According to the Ministry of Urban Development, the stadium has been included in the national priority project list following the approval of its comprehensive master plan. The current government approved the master plan in late October, directing concerned stakeholders to move forward with new agreements and implementation mechanisms.

Earlier, a Cabinet meeting had instructed relevant bodies—including Tribhuvan University (TU), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Council (NSC)—to proceed with land acquisition and related legal processes in line with the approved master plan.

The directive was issued to ensure timely execution of the project and to remove institutional bottlenecks.

The Ministry of Urban Development said that, in accordance with the approved master plan, the government is planning to invest an additional Rs 10 billion in the Kirtipur cricket stadium.

The investment will be phased and aligned with infrastructure expansion, structural upgrades, and modernization of facilities.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly increase the stadium’s seating capacity and transform it into a state-of-the-art cricket venue, capable of hosting high-profile international matches and tournaments.

Officials say the upgraded stadium will meet global standards in terms of player facilities, spectator amenities, safety systems, and broadcast infrastructure.

The inclusion of the Kirtipur cricket stadium in the national priority list places it alongside strategically important infrastructure projects, ensuring budgetary priority, faster approvals, and stronger inter-ministerial coordination.

The government’s decision comes amid rising public and institutional pressure to strengthen sports infrastructure, particularly cricket, which has seen rapid growth in popularity and international recognition for Nepal in recent years.

Officials believe that the modernization of the Kirtipur stadium will not only support the development of domestic cricket but also enhance Nepal’s capacity to host international sporting events, contributing to sports tourism, urban development, and related economic activities.

The Ministry of Urban Development said further details on project timelines, procurement modalities, and implementation phases will be announced as the project advances under the national priority framework.
