KATHMANDU: Nepal’s 45 public enterprises generated a total operating revenue of NPR 660.15 billion in the fiscal year 2080/81 (2023/24), marking a marginal 0.22% decline from the previous year, according to the latest economic survey. These enterprises contribute 11.57% to the nation’s GDP, underscoring their significant role in the economy.
Of the 45 public enterprises, 20 are fully government-owned, while 25 have majority government stakes. The survey reveals a mixed performance: 28 enterprises recorded a net profit of NPR 42.62 billion, down 12.88% from the previous year, while 16 enterprises incurred a net loss of NPR 3.63 billion, an 8.65% increase in losses compared to 2079/80. Additionally, two enterprises remain non-operational.
The decline in profits, coupled with rising losses, highlights ongoing challenges in the management and efficiency of public enterprises. The 11.50% drop in net profits for profitable enterprises and the growing losses in others signal the need for reforms, especially as the government plans to privatize or monetize underperforming entities in the upcoming 2082/83 budget.
This data comes as Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel prepares to present the 2025/26 budget, which is expected to address these challenges through policies promoting private sector involvement and infrastructure development.
