NRB increases foreign travel currency limit to $3,000 for Nepali citizens

KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has raised the foreign currency allowance for Nepali citizens traveling abroad to USD 3,000, up from the existing limit of USD 2,500. The announcement was made on Friday by Governor Prof. Dr. Bishwanath Paudel during the unveiling of the monetary policy for the fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26).

The move aims to facilitate overseas travel and ease payment constraints for Nepalis traveling for personal, educational, medical, or business purposes.

This increase comes as part of a broader effort by the central bank to modernize foreign exchange policies and align them with global travel cost trends, while also promoting transparency in outward remittances and currency exchange practices.

Under the updated policy, individuals will now be allowed to carry up to USD 3,000 in cash or prepaid travel cards, subject to necessary documentation and regulatory approvals from licensed foreign exchange providers or banks.

The change is expected to ease financial hurdles for Nepalis traveling abroad, particularly for destinations where the cost of living and services is high.

This is one of several liberal measures introduced in Governor Paudel’s first monetary policy, which focuses on credit expansion, investor confidence, foreign currency regulation, and financial access.
