PM Oli to visit India on September 16; Border issues, energy, bilateral projects on agenda

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to embark on a two-day official visit to India starting September 16, following a formal invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, government sources confirmed. The high-level visit marks Oli’s shortest diplomatic trip to India, with his return to Kathmandu scheduled for September 17.

While major breakthroughs on longstanding issues are not expected, the visit aims to strengthen Nepal-India bilateral ties, review past agreements, and push forward new development and infrastructure projects.

Preparations are already underway for a Home Secretary-level Border Working Group (BWG) meeting in New Delhi, where contentious matters like the Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura disputes are expected to resurface. Nepal had previously amended its constitution to incorporate these territories into its official map — a move led by Oli during his earlier tenure that drew sharp reactions from India.

Insiders suggest the visit will set the tone for Narendra Modi’s possible visit to Nepal in November, likely to a religious, touristic, or economically strategic location instead of Kathmandu.

This diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened attention to Nepal-India border relations, regional connectivity, and trade partnerships, placing both leaders under the spotlight for fostering regional stability and economic collaboration.
