PM Oli announces installation of 500 deep bore wells in drought-hit Tarai, Commits immediate irrigation relief

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced the government’s immediate plan to install 500 deep bore wells across the drought-stricken Tarai region, aiming to provide urgent irrigation relief to farmlands parched by severe water shortages.

Speaking at a public event in Mahottari on Friday, Prime Minister Oli said each bore well would have the capacity to irrigate up to 60 bighas of agricultural land. “We are initiating immediate measures. Around 500 deep bore wells will be installed without delay. One bore well can irrigate nearly 60 bighas of land,” he declared.

Highlighting the alarming state of drought across Madhesh, Oli stated that the government has already declared the region as a disaster-affected zone due to acute water scarcity. He assured that the government’s response would not stop at declarations but will include both short-term and long-term solutions.

“Madhesh is facing drought due to a lack of water. We’ve declared it a crisis-hit zone, but this is not merely symbolic. Our government is working on dual strategies—immediate relief and long-term mitigation,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

He also revealed the government’s broader ecological vision, including efforts to construct water reservoirs and ponds in the Chure hills to conserve water and recharge groundwater. “We are constructing water bodies in the Chure region to retain surface water, preventing groundwater depletion and reversing environmental degradation,” Oli said.

The Prime Minister called upon all government agencies, NGOs, and development partners to support the campaign to restore water security in Madhesh. “I request all government institutions and non-government organizations to collaborate with us on this vital initiative,” he urged.

Oli also reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the irrigation crisis across all eight districts of the Madhesh Province. “Our intervention will cover all eight districts. The government is fully committed to addressing the hardship of farmers in this region,” he concluded.

The announcement comes amid rising concern over agricultural losses, food insecurity, and growing demands for climate-resilient water infrastructure in southern Nepal. With this declaration, the Oli administration aims to assert rapid action in a region grappling with one of its worst droughts in decades.
