Santosh Kunwar Elected in NRNA Australia

KATHMANDU: Santosh Kunwar and his entire panel have been elected in the recent Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Australia elections. In the election held on Saturday, July 26, Kunwar defeated his opponents Sanjeev Dhakal Gorkhali and Bhairav Dhakal by a large margin.

Kunwar defeated Sanjeev Gorkhali Dhakal from Northern Territory (2,126 votes) and Bhairav Dhakal from Perth, Western Australia (3,727 votes). Out of the total 16,121 registered voters across Australia, 13,701 votes were cast. Kunwar secured 6,839 votes.

Kunwar, who has been actively serving in various roles within NRNA for nearly a decade, was previously the General Secretary of the organization. Running with a full panel, Kunwar stated that his goal is to make the organization more investment-friendly, transparent, and inclusive. He described the victory as a win for all members and promised to honor the trust placed in him.

Looking ahead, Kunwar has announced an ambitious plan to secure $2 million in funding and bring in grants from both federal and state governments in Australia.

A long-time member of NRNA, Kunwar previously served as General Secretary and has held various key positions, including State Coordinator (2017–2019), ICC Member (2019–2021), and Oceania Regional Deputy Coordinator (2021–2023).

He also plans to expand successful initiatives like the Nepal Festival and sports programs as model events. General Secretary: Chunmani Sapkota from Canberra secured 7,030 votes, while his opponents Bharatmani Devkota from Sydney and current Treasurer Arjun Gautam received 3,253 and 1,814 votes respectively. Treasurer: Nijan Chaulagai won with 7,087 votes, defeating Luna Siwakoti who secured 4,756 votes. Secretary: Kalyan Khadka emerged victorious with 7,180 votes.

Additionally, Rijna Adhikari was elected as the Women’s Coordinator, and Pukar Ghimire was elected as the National Youth Coordinator.

Most of the candidates from Kunwar’s panel secured victory in the election, signaling widespread support for his leadership and vision.
