KATHMANDU: Nepali migrant workers abroad will now be able to contribute directly to the Social Security Fund (SSF) through mobile banking platforms, thanks to a new digital integration initiative launched through a partnership between FonePay Digital Payment Network and the Social Security Fund.
The agreement was signed by Paras Kunwar, Chief Operating Officer of FonePay, and Kabiraj Adhikari, Executive Director of the Social Security Fund, amid the presence of high-ranking officials from both institutions.
Under this agreement, the FonePay Bills platform will enable Nepali migrant workers to make seamless digital contributions to the SSF using the mobile banking apps of any bank or financial institution in Nepal. This is expected to significantly boost participation in Nepal’s formal social protection system among the migrant labor force.
Enhanced Access and Formalization of Remittance
FonePay COO Kunwar stated, “FonePay’s extensive digital network will make it easier for migrant workers to contribute to the Social Security Fund. This initiative will also encourage the use of formal remittance channels for sending money to Nepal.”
The platform is now live and accessible through the “FonePay Bills” feature integrated into Nepal’s major banking apps, providing secure, fast, and transparent payment services.
The new digital contribution mechanism is a significant step toward increasing the inclusion of migrant workers in Nepal’s social safety nets and expanding their access to formal financial services. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader goals of digitization, remittance channel formalization, and financial empowerment of the diaspora.
Officials expect this development will reduce procedural hurdles, improve transparency in social protection contributions, and promote long-term financial planning among Nepali workers overseas.
