DG Dahal transferred amid firm stand on MRP enforcement

KATHMANDU: Kumar Prasad Dahal, Director General of the Department of Commerce, Supplies, and Consumer Protection under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, has been transferred to the National Inclusion Commission less than six months after assuming his post.

The government announced Dahal’s transfer on Monday. He had taken charge as Director General on August 5, 2024 (21 Shrawan 2081) and was known for his uncompromising enforcement of the government’s mandatory Maximum Retail Price (MRP) policy on all consumer goods.

Dahal was appointed to the position in 2016 (2073 BS) after being recommended for the role of Joint Secretary through open competition. The Commerce Department was his first major posting as Director General, where he quickly gained a reputation for strict monitoring and implementation of consumer protection measures.

The government’s MRP policy requires all consumable goods to display a maximum retail price to prevent overcharging and protect consumers. Under Dahal’s leadership, the department intensified inspections and took firm actions against violators, earning both praise for consumer rights protection and criticism from some in the business community.

No official reason has been given for Dahal’s early transfer.
