Nepal increases seats for MBBS and BDS programs

KATHMANDU: The Medical Education Commission has decided to increase the number of seats available for MBBS and BDS programs across the country. The decision was made during a meeting held on Thursday at Singha Durbar.

Under the new arrangement, the seat ceiling for MBBS has been raised from 100 to 130, while the cap for BDS has been increased from 50 to 60. According to a commission member present at the meeting, the allocation will depend on whether medical colleges meet required standards in infrastructure, faculty, and other criteria.

“For colleges that meet the standards, the seats will be allocated accordingly,” the member said.

The highest MBBS seat allocation—130—has been granted to Birat Medical College, Chitwan Medical College, and the College of Medical Sciences in Bharatpur. Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara has been approved for 120 MBBS seats.

Medical education reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has long opposed increases in medical college seats and tuition fees, warning that such moves could compromise accessibility and transparency in Nepal’s medical education system. He has consistently campaigned for reforms aimed at ensuring fairness and quality in the sector.
