Government declares Gen-Z protest victims as martyrs, announces Rs 1 million relief for each family

KATHMANDU: The government has declared those who lost their lives during the Gen Z youth movement as martyrs and announced a relief package of NPR 1 million for each victim’s family.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who assumed office today as head of the interim government, signed the decision as her first major move in office.

Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal informed that a total of 72 people lost their lives during the protests — including 59 demonstrators, 10 prisoners, and 3 security personnel. Similarly, 134 protestors and 57 security personnel sustained injuries in the clashes.

The government’s decision to recognize the deceased as martyrs and provide immediate financial support is being seen as a symbolic yet significant step to address the grievances of the Gen Z movement, which has shaken the nation’s political and socio-economic landscape in recent weeks.
