Energy Minister Ghising’s First Decision: Collect NEA’s Outstanding Dues

KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Minister for Energy Kul Man Ghising formally assumed office on Monday and announced his first decision—initiating the collection of long-pending dues owed to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

Minister Ghising, who previously served as the executive director of the NEA, emphasized that recovering outstanding payments will be a top priority under his leadership. The dues, amounting to billions of rupees, have long strained the authority’s financial position and obstructed further investment in Nepal’s power sector.

In a symbolic gesture reflecting austerity and reform, Ghising also declared that he would not accept garlands, ceremonial scarves (khada), or vermilion powder during official programs.

Observers see the minister’s first decision as a clear signal of his intent to enforce financial discipline within Nepal’s energy sector and ensure accountability in public utilities.

Ghising Declares Zero Tolerance on Corruption, Refuses Government Perks

Newly appointed Energy Minister Kul Man Ghising has announced that he will not accept any government perks beyond essential security arrangements, vowing to dedicate his salary and allowances to a fund supporting martyrs’ families.

Speaking after assuming office, Ghising emphasized that his tenure will be guided by transparency, austerity, and accountability. “I will not take any government facilities. My salary will go into the martyrs’ support fund,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to integrity in public service.

Ghising further declared a policy of zero tolerance against corruption, describing the fight against irregularities as a matter of life and death for him. “Zero tolerance will be adopted. Corruption must be eradicated. If irregularities are found, strict action will be taken,” he said.

Urging the public to directly approach him if questions arise regarding his transparency, Ghising stressed that meritocracy will be central to his leadership. “The right person will be placed in the right position. There will be no compromise in this policy,” he added.
