Kul Man Ghising launches national reconstruction drive after Gen-Z protest damages

KATHMANDU: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Kul Man Ghising has unveiled a sweeping reconstruction initiative following the large-scale destruction caused during the Gen-Z protest of September 8–9, 2025 (2082 Bhadra 23–24 BS), which left critical public assets in ashes and caused heavy financial losses.

Acting on a Cabinet decision dated 2082 Ashwin 5 BS, the government has formed a high-level Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Committee, chaired by the Finance Minister and including the Home Minister, Urban Development Minister, and the Chief Secretary. The Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development will serve as member-secretary.

The committee is tasked with drafting and approving a master plan for rebuilding damaged infrastructure, supervising implementation, and monitoring all reconstruction activities.

Reconstruction Fund Established

To back the initiative, the government has also announced the creation of the Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund, officially launched on 2082 Ashwin 8 BS.

The fund will channel resources into rebuilding destroyed assets, economic recovery, and relief measures. Contributions can be deposited at Rastriya Banijya Bank, Singha Durbar, Kathmandu under account number 1960100102070004 (SWIFT: RBBANPKA). Donations are also possible via QR code.

Global Appeal for Support

In an unprecedented move, Minister Kul Man Ghising has issued an international appeal for solidarity, titled “Call for Global Support: Urgent Appeal for the Restoration and Reconstruction of Nepal’s Public Assets.”

The government is inviting contributions from:

Federal, provincial, and local governments

Private sector and corporate houses

Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) community

Friendly nations, development partners, and international organizations

“This fund will be used with full transparency. We appeal to all Nepalis at home and abroad, and the global community, to join this national campaign for reconstruction,” Minister Ghising said in his statement.

Ensuring Stability and Economic Recovery

The initiative comes at a time when Nepal faces mounting challenges from infrastructure collapse, investor uncertainty, and weakened economic confidence following weeks of political and social unrest.

Ghising emphasized that reconstruction efforts are not only about rebuilding damaged roads, bridges, and public facilities, but also about restoring stability, ensuring peace and security, and driving Nepal’s economic recovery.

Message of Unity and Festive Greetings

Concluding his statement, Minister Ghising extended festive greetings on the occasion of Dashain, Tihar, Nepal Sambat 1146, and Chhath festival, urging citizens worldwide to stand together in the nation’s rebuilding drive.

“This is not just a government campaign—it is a national movement of resilience. With the support of Nepalis and friends of Nepal everywhere, we will rebuild stronger and better,” Ghising noted.
