Kathmandu Valley Sealed: Govt imposes 3 day ban on vehicle entry and exit amid heavy rainfall risks

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has imposed a strict three-day ban on vehicle movement in and out of the Kathmandu Valley following warnings of severe rainfall, floods, and landslides.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) confirmed that the travel suspension applies to all private and public vehicles, including long-distance buses, trucks, and commercial carriers. According to NDRRMA’s Head of Disaster Operations, Ram Bahadur KC, the unprecedented measure was taken to protect lives and minimize disaster-related losses.

The official notice issued by the Authority highlights that highways leading to and from the Valley, including critical lifelines connecting Kathmandu with major trade and travel routes, will remain completely shut. Continuous rainfall, triggered by monsoon activity, has significantly increased risks of floods, road collapses, and deadly landslides across multiple provinces.

Impact on Travel, Businesses, and Supply Chains

The shutdown of Kathmandu’s major entry and exit routes is expected to severely impact:

Domestic and international travel – with buses and cargo trucks halted.

Supply chains – including essential goods such as fuel, food, and construction materials.

Tourism and trekking sectors – as peak travel routes to popular destinations in Nepal are now suspended.

The NDRRMA has urged residents and travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys and remain alert to official updates through media, radio, and government announcements. Emergency and rescue vehicles will be prioritized in case of urgent operations.
