Nepal, Germany celebrate 35 years of German unity and 67 years of bilateral partnership

KATHMANDU: Nepal and Germany marked a significant milestone in their longstanding friendship as the Day of German Unity and the 67th anniversary of Nepal–Germany diplomatic relations were celebrated at the German Ambassador’s residence in Gyaneshwor on November 7. The event was hosted by His Excellency Udo Eugen Volz, Ambassador of Germany to Nepal, along with Mrs. Marianne Beck-Volz. The Right Honourable Ram Sahay Yadav attended the ceremony as the special guest, along with senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the civil society.

The Day of German Unity commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 — a monumental event that reunited East and West Germany after nearly three decades of division. The peaceful revolution that unfolded in Berlin not only reshaped Germany but also strengthened democratic values across Europe. Ambassador Volz highlighted this historic transformation, noting that unity, cooperation, and democratic resilience remain central to Germany’s partnership with Nepal.

“Today, as we celebrate 35 years of German Unity, we also mark 67 years of Nepal–Germany friendship,” Ambassador Volz said in his remarks. “Germany has continued to stand with Nepal through the civil conflict, the 2015 earthquake, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Nepal’s ongoing democratic renewal.”

The celebration also acknowledged milestones in German Development Cooperation in Nepal, including 51 years of GIZ technical cooperation, 62 years of KfW’s financial cooperation, and 18 years of PTB’s work in strengthening Nepal’s quality infrastructure in standards, testing, and accreditation.

The evening reflected the shared values of trust, democracy, development cooperation, and people-to-people connections, reaffirming Nepal and Germany’s commitment to continued partnership and progress in the years to come.
