KATHMANDU: The bodies of two Indian nationals who had gone missing in Nepal’s Himalayan Manang district since October 19 (3 Kartik) were recovered on Sunday, according to Nepali authorities. The victims have been identified as 52-year-old Jigneshkumar Lallubhai Patel and his 17-year-old daughter Priyanskakumari Patel, both residents of India. Armed Police Force Nepal located their bodies at around 2 PM on Sunday.
The father-daughter duo had been staying at Gyalsen Hotel in Ngisyang Rural Municipality-4 and had set out to visit Maleripa Monastery in Ward-5 on the day they disappeared. The hotel informed rescue authorities after they failed to return and were unreachable.
Initially, search and rescue efforts were carried out by the Nepal Mountain Rescue Training School in Manang. When they could not be located, a specialized high-altitude rescue team from the Armed Police Force (APF)—led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Hira Bahadur Jisi—was deployed on November 8 (23 Kartik) with mountaineering rescue equipment.
According to APF Deputy Spokesperson DSP Shailendra Thapa, both bodies were found approximately 100 meters above the monastery site, buried under snow. The search team included mountain rescue-trained personnel due to the difficult and snow-covered terrain.
Local authorities are coordinating with Indian officials to facilitate the transportation and repatriation of the bodies.
The incident highlights growing traveler safety concerns in Nepal’s high-altitude trekking regions during the early winter season, when sudden weather changes and snow accumulation pose risks to hikers, trekkers, and pilgrims from India and abroad.
