KATHMANDU: The Embassy of Nepal in Lisbon has urged Nepalis in Nepal and the Middle East to remain vigilant against fraudulent job schemes following Portugal’s suspension of worker visa issuance.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the embassy warned that the Portuguese government has stopped issuing all categories of work visas — except for highly skilled professionals — effective October 23, 2025 (Kartik 6, 2082 BS). The embassy called on all concerned individuals and recruitment agencies to exercise caution and avoid involvement in any illegal activities related to labor migration to Portugal.
Reports received by the embassy indicate that fraudulent agents and human traffickers have been deceiving Nepalis by promising employment opportunities in Portugal under the pretext of securing worker visas. The embassy cautioned that no one can legally travel to Portugal under such visas at present, as the government’s suspension order remains in effect.
“The Embassy strongly advises Nepalis not to fall prey to individuals or organizations claiming to facilitate work visas to Portugal. Any such activities are illegal, and those involved may face serious legal consequences,” the statement said.
The advisory comes amid growing concerns about labor migration fraud targeting Nepalis across the Gulf region, Malaysia, and other labor destinations. Authorities say criminal networks have increasingly been exploiting the demand for European employment opportunities by offering fake documents, job contracts, and visa promises.
The embassy reiterated that individuals wishing to work in Portugal must verify visa procedures through official government channels and consult only with authorized recruitment agencies registered in Nepal.
The Portuguese government’s visa policy revision aligns with its broader labor market reforms aimed at regulating migration inflows and prioritizing skilled labor. Nepali workers are among the thousands across Asia who had sought Portugal as a preferred destination in recent years due to its growing demand for labor in hospitality, agriculture, and construction sectors.
