KATHMANDU: In a bid to encourage tax compliance and strengthen Nepal’s revenue governance, the government has honored the highest taxpayers of the fiscal year 2080/81 during the National Tax Day 2082. The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) recognized Raj Bahadur Shah as the highest individual income taxpayer in the country, acknowledging his contribution to Nepal’s formal economy at a time when tax collection remains critical for fiscal stability.
According to IRD, Shah topped the list among individual taxpayers, becoming Nepal’s biggest personal income tax contributor for the year. The government aims to publicly recognize top taxpayers to promote transparency, encourage voluntary compliance, and motivate businesses and individuals to contribute more responsibly to the national revenue system.
Top Institutional Taxpayers: Nepal Telecom Authority Leads the List
On the institutional front, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) emerged as the highest taxpayer among statutory bodies. Officials stated that NTA continues to play a major role in contributing to government revenue through regulatory fees and other financial obligations, reflecting the growing size and importance of Nepal’s telecommunications and digital services industry.
In the single proprietorship category, Third Eye International was recognized as the top taxpayer, marking strong compliance within the small business sector.
Export Sector: Dabur Nepal Tops Goods Export Category
Among goods-exporting firms, Dabur Nepal Pvt. Ltd. was honored for paying the highest taxes last fiscal year. Its consistent performance in export-led manufacturing reflects the strength of Nepal’s FMCG and herbal product industries, which continue to hold significant potential in India and global markets.
In the IT service export category, Verix Nepal Pvt. Ltd. secured the top position, highlighting the increasing contribution of Nepal’s information technology companies to the global digital economy. Similarly, Poshak Breeder Farm Pvt. Ltd. led the agricultural farming category as the top taxpayer.
Banking and Corporate Sector: NIMB Bank Tops Financial Category
Within the banking and financial sector (BFIs), Nepal Investment Mega Bank (NIMB) was declared the top taxpayer. Despite challenges in liquidity, interest rate fluctuations, and declining profits across the financial sector, NIMB’s tax contribution reflects its scale and business performance.
In the health and education segment, Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital was recognized as the leading taxpayer, demonstrating the rising financial footprint of the private healthcare industry in Nepal.
Tourism, Retail, and Energy Sectors Also Recognized
The IRD honored Soaltee Hotel Limited as the highest taxpayer in the tourism category—an important development as Nepal’s hospitality industry works to recover from the pandemic downturn and rebuild investor confidence.
In retail trade, Bhatbhateni Superstore topped the list of highest taxpayers, reflecting its massive scale in Nepal’s consumer market and expanding business operations nationwide.
In the segment of companies with annual transactions between Rs 50 crore and Rs 100 crore, CDS & Clearing Limited secured the top position.
From the energy sector, Bhotekoshi Power Company Limited was honored as the highest taxpayer, showcasing the increasing role of hydropower producers in national revenue generation.
In remittances—one of Nepal’s largest foreign currency sources—IME Limited stood out as the highest taxpayer in the category.
VAT Compliance Leaders and Special Industry Category
As per IRD data, from FY 2076 to 2082 Asar, Nepal Telecom Limited paid the highest Value Added Tax (VAT) on time, reinforcing its long-standing position as one of the largest revenue contributors to the government.
Among special industries, Unilever Nepal Limited topped the list for paying the highest taxes, indicating strong performance in Nepal’s consumer goods market.
In addition, the Baglung Tax Office was recognized as the best-performing tax office for the year, reflecting improvements in administrative efficiency and service delivery.
