KATHMANDU: A free residential training program aimed at preparing professional women trekking guides has officially begun in Garma, Solukhumbu, from Tuesday. The initiative is jointly organized by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP) under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with a strong focus on women’s empowerment and sustainable tourism development.
The 15-day training, operated in collaboration with the Nepal Mountain Academy, brings together 28 selected women from across the country. The program is designed to equip participants with essential trekking skills, including route and trail knowledge, safety management, first aid, mountain etiquette, and professional service standards required in Nepal’s high-altitude trekking sector.
Officials Highlight Importance of Women’s Participation in Tourism
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Solukhumbu District Coordination Officer Chandra Singh Shrestha, Solududhkunda Municipality Administration Chief Tukti Sherpa, Ward-7 Chair Sonam Sherpa, Ward Member Balakaji Karki, and Principal of the Business Training Center Lakpa Rinzee Sherpa.
Speaking at the ceremony, the officials emphasized that the increasing interest of women in trekking and adventure tourism will help make Nepal’s Himalayan tourism safer, more reliable, and more inclusive. They praised NTB’s continuous capacity-building initiatives, noting that such programs are laying a strong foundation for sustainable tourism promotion from the local to the national level.
Expanding Women’s Role in Trekking
The Nepal Tourism Board said that broadening women’s participation in trekking is essential for the inclusive development of Nepal’s tourism economy. The Board believes that the training will help participants become confident, skilled, and professionally qualified trekking guides, enabling them to access new economic opportunities.
NTB has also expressed its commitment to expanding similar capacity-enhancement programs in the future, focusing on community-based tourism and women’s economic empowerment.
The program is expected to contribute to Nepal’s long-term goal of creating a more diverse, equitable, and skilled workforce in the Himalayan tourism sector.
