KATHMANDU: All flights at Simara Airport were cancelled on Wednesday after clashes erupted between CPN-UML cadres and Gen-Z protesters, prompting authorities to impose a curfew and halt airport operations for the entire day.
Tribhuvan International Airport spokesperson Rinji Sherpa confirmed that both-way flights on the Simara–Kathmandu route were cancelled following the escalating tensions outside the airport.
“Buddha Air operated one morning flight to Simara. All remaining flights for the day have been cancelled. Passengers who had already reached the airport were sent back, and those scheduled for afternoon flights have been informed by their respective airlines,” Sherpa said.
Before the situation turned volatile, Buddha Air had completed its first scheduled flight. Passengers had already boarded the second flight when sudden unrest broke out near the airport premises due to a confrontation between UML supporters and Gen-Z youths.
Authorities immediately intervened. The Bara District Administration Office imposed a curfew within 500 meters of the airport and along the Gandak Canal–Pathlaiya road section, also covering 500 meters on both sides. The curfew will remain in effect until 8 PM today.
Following the order, Buddha Air suspended its remaining flights and cleared all passengers from the airport.
Local security officials said the situation remains tense, with police deployed in large numbers to prevent further escalation. Airlines are expected to resume services only after authorities fully lift movement restrictions and declare the area safe.
