Nepal, Bangladesh move forward on Sunkoshi-3, cross-border power export study

KATHMANDU: Nepal and Bangladesh have agreed to expand electricity trade and accelerate joint hydropower and transmission projects during the 7th meeting of the Nepal–Bangladesh Joint Steering Committee (JSC) held on Tuesday in Dhaka.

The meeting was co-chaired by Nepal’s Energy Secretary Chiranjibi Chataut and Bangladesh’s Power and Energy Secretary Farhana Ahmed, and endorsed the recommendations made by the Joint Working Group (JWG) that met a day earlier.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the two sides agreed that Bangladesh, which currently imports 40 MW of electricity from Nepal, will begin the approval process to import an additional 20 MW.

Bangladesh also agreed to advance investment procedures for the Sunkoshi-3 hydropower project by forming an expert review committee and moving toward finalizing the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA).

The meeting further decided to conduct a joint study on exporting power from Nepal to Bangladesh through India via transmission routes connected to Barapukuria, Panchagarh/Thakurgaon, Bheramara, and Kushtia.

Both governments will complete internal procedures to sign an MoU on cooperation in renewable energy and energy efficiency, under which Bangladesh will support Nepal in energy auditing, EV charging systems, rooftop solar, and conservation technologies.

Nepal and Bangladesh will also initiate capacity-building programs, with the first phase of training for Bangladeshi officials to be held in Kathmandu, followed by training for Nepali officials in Bangladesh.

The two countries additionally agreed to jointly seek India’s consent on the proposed trilateral MoU for Nepal–India–Bangladesh energy cooperation.

Officials said the meeting focused on expanding electricity exchange, strengthening cross-border transmission infrastructure, and advancing long-term power-sector collaboration.
