KATHMANDU: The two factions of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), which had been operating separately, have reached a landmark unity agreement. The two organizations, led by Mahesh Kumar Shrestha and Dr. Badri K.C., have agreed to unite under a 10-point consensus.
The formal announcement of this unity is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, in the presence of the Prime Minister.
Mahesh Shrestha to Head the AssociationAccording to the core agreement, Mahesh Kumar Shrestha will now lead NRNA globally. Both sides agreed to proceed toward a unity general convention under Shrestha’s leadership, while also recognizing the existence of the committee led by Dr. Badri K.C.
“The long-standing effort has achieved its goal. The main unity agreement has been signed. The unity will be announced at Baluwatar on Sunday in the presence of the Prime Minister,” said an NRNA leader. “Now, Mahesh Shrestha will lead the NRNA worldwide.”
Key Points of the AgreementAcceptance of Leadership: The agreement recognizes both the Executive Committee elected by the 11th International General Convention (October 2023) led by Dr. Badri K.C. and the Executive Committee elected by the Unity General Convention (May 2025) organized by the High-Level Committee led by former President Dr. Shesh Ghale, under the leadership of Mahesh Kumar Shrestha.
New General Convention: The 12th General Convention of NRNA will be held by April 17, 2026. The term of the committee led by Mahesh Kumar Shrestha will be considered a full term for this purpose.
Withdrawal of Cases: All parties have agreed to withdraw the legal cases filed in various courts regarding NRNA’s official status and related issues.
Steering Committee: An 11-member Steering Committee will be formed to ensure transparency and trustworthiness of the 12th General Convention. Members of this committee will not be allowed to run as candidates in the 12th General Convention.
Financial Transparency: An independent third party audit will be conducted to ensure the transparency and reliability of the financial aspects of both NRNA factions.
Documentation and Approval: The 10-point agreement was signed in the presence of a representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and will be documented there. All points of the agreement are to be ratified by the association’s upcoming 12th General Convention.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Badri K.C. (President elected from the 11th General Convention) and Mahesh Kumar Shrestha (President elected from the Unity General Convention). It also states that any disputes arising during implementation will be resolved through coordination and agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
