KATHMANDU: The Government of India has directed all smartphone manufacturers—global and domestic—to pre-install the state-run cyber safety application Sanchar Saathi on every new device sold in the country.
The move aims to curb rising digital fraud, SIM-related crimes, mobile theft, and misuse of telecom services. The app, developed by India’s Department of Telecommunications, allows users to track stolen phones, block SIM misuse, and verify mobile connections registered under their name.
Manufacturers have been asked to comply immediately, making the security tool a default feature for all upcoming models. The directive is seen as part of India’s broader push to strengthen cybersecurity, protect consumers, and tighten digital regulation across the rapidly expanding smartphone market.
