Microsoft to invest $17.5 billion in India to boost AI and cloud infrastructure

KATHMANDU: Global technology company Microsoft has announced a $17.5 billion investment in India over the next four years, marking its largest-ever capital commitment in Asia. The investment aims to strengthen India’s position in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and digital innovation.

The announcement was made by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials during his visit to India. Nadella said the investment is part of Microsoft’s strategy to accelerate India’s AI-first vision and expand local digital infrastructure.

The funding will focus on expanding hyperscale data centers across major Indian cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, and Noida, developing workforce skill programs for millions of professionals in AI and digital technologies, enhancing sovereign cloud solutions for secure data management, and strengthening Microsoft’s innovation hubs in India.

The investment builds on an earlier $3 billion commitment in 2025 and is expected to create jobs, boost digital skills, and support India’s economic growth.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the investment, highlighting it as a boost to India’s digital economy and technological innovation. Analysts say this reflects global confidence in India’s tech sector and strengthens the country’s position as a hub for AI and cloud services. The investment comes amid increasing competition among global technology firms to expand AI and cloud infrastructure in India.
