Ncell issues warning to VAS provider over unauthorized political SMS circulation

KATHMANDU: Ncell has raised serious concerns over an incident involving the circulation of a large number of political SMS messages through a bulk SMS service provider. The telecom operator clarified that none of these unauthorized messages were delivered to its customers.

Following an internal review and risk assessment, Ncell issued a formal warning to Aakash Tech, a Value-Added Service (VAS) provider partnered with Ncell, for its role in circulating the SMS. The company emphasized that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for misuse of its telecom services for unauthorized or politically motivated purposes.

“Ncell strictly prohibits the use of its services for any content that violates laws, regulations, ethical standards, or customer data privacy,” the company said in an official statement. As Nepal’s first telecom operator to receive ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certifications for information security and data privacy, Ncell reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of customer data security and personal privacy.

The company also highlighted that strong technical, operational, and contractual safeguards are in place to protect customers’ personal information. “Customer data is not shared or permitted to be misused for any unauthorized purpose,” Ncell said.

Ncell assured its customers and stakeholders that it remains fully committed to complying with prevailing laws while safeguarding trust, ensuring uninterrupted service, and preventing any misuse of its telecom infrastructure.

This incident comes at a time when telecom services are increasingly scrutinized for potential misuse, and Ncell’s response underscores the company’s proactive stance on data privacy and ethical service use.
