Identity of Nepali killed in Iran drone attack in UAE confirmed by Embassy

KATHMANDU: The identity of a Nepali national killed in a drone attack in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been officially confirmed, following heightened regional tensions triggered by military escalation involving Iran.

According to the Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi, the deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Diwas Shrestha from Gorkha district. The confirmation was received from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

In an official statement, the embassy said that Shrestha lost his life while attempting to neutralize a drone at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi. He was employed as a security guard at a Middle East-based company.

“Official information has been received from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the tragic death of Nepali citizen Mr. Diwas Shrestha (29), originally from Gorkha district, who was working as a security guard at a Middle East company and was killed during an incident while disabling a drone at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi,” the embassy stated.

The incident occurred amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East following reported drone and missile exchanges involving Iran and regional actors. Security has been tightened across key infrastructure facilities in the Gulf region, particularly airports and energy installations, as authorities attempt to mitigate further threats.

Embassy of Nepal, Abu Dhabi said it is coordinating with UAE authorities and the victim’s family regarding repatriation procedures and necessary documentation. Further details about compensation, insurance claims, and support mechanisms for the bereaved family are expected to be clarified in coordination with the employer company and relevant UAE agencies.

Zayed International Airport, one of the UAE’s major aviation hubs, has reportedly increased security protocols following the incident. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have not disclosed further operational details, citing ongoing security assessments.

The tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of migrant workers in conflict-prone regions. Thousands of Nepali migrant workers are employed across the Gulf countries, particularly in security, construction, hospitality, and energy sectors, making geopolitical instability in the region a matter of serious concern for Nepal’s foreign employment and remittance-dependent economy.

Officials have indicated that further updates will be provided once additional information is received from UAE authorities.
