NRNA urges government to prepare for security and evacuation amid Middle East crisis

KATHMANDU: The escalating war-like situation among major powers in the Middle East has raised serious concerns about the safety of Nepali nationals working in the region. In this context, the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) International Coordination Council has urged the Government of Nepal to immediately initiate diplomatic and security measures and prepare contingency plans for possible evacuation.

Ramesh Shrestha, Middle East Coordinator of the NRNA International Coordination Council, formally informed Foreign Minister Balananda Sharma of the council’s decisions, calling for urgent steps to ensure the safety of Nepalis, establish a 24-hour hotline service, and prepare for emergency rescue operations if required.

According to NRNA, more than two million Nepali nationals are currently employed across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and other Gulf countries. The association stated that the increasing military activities, missile strikes, and aerial attacks in the region have heightened fear and insecurity within the Nepali community.

Expressing deep sorrow over reports of the death of a Nepali national in an attack at Abu Dhabi airport, the organization said the incident has further intensified anxiety among Nepalis residing in the region.

A virtual meeting attended by both presidents of the International Coordination Council and coordinated by Shrestha reviewed the evolving situation and decided to treat the crisis with utmost seriousness. The council noted recent large-scale bombardments and missile attacks targeting several Middle Eastern countries and urged all Nepalis in the region to remain on high alert and strictly follow local security advisories.

The NRNA has proposed mobilizing its experience, resources, and networks to coordinate closely with the Government of Nepal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepali embassies, and diplomatic missions to establish a round-the-clock emergency hotline. It also plans to activate National Coordination Council representatives in Middle Eastern countries to facilitate rapid information exchange and emergency assistance.

Furthermore, the association highlighted that Nepalis transiting through Middle Eastern countries while returning home from other destinations could also face disruptions, and pledged to assist in coordination and facilitation efforts.

Should the situation deteriorate further, NRNA has urged the government to initiate diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe and organized repatriation of Nepali citizens from conflict-affected areas.
