KATHMANDU: A total of 252 international flight arrivals have been cancelled at Kathmandu’s main international gateway in the past nine days after airspace closures across Gulf countries disrupted global aviation routes, according to the Tribhuvan International Airport.
Airport authorities said seven international airlines operating flights to Nepal were affected as regional airspace restrictions forced carriers to suspend or cancel scheduled services.
Among the affected airlines, Qatar Airways recorded the highest number of cancelled arrivals with 52 flights, followed by Air Arabia with 48 flights and Flydubai with 46 flights.
Other airlines experiencing significant cancellations include Himalaya Airlines with 35 cancelled flights, Kuwait Airways with 30 flights, Nepal Airlines with 25 flights, and Jazeera Airways with 16 cancelled arrivals.
Officials at Tribhuvan International Airport said the cancellations were largely triggered by temporary closure of airspace in parts of the Middle East, which forced airlines to reroute flights or suspend operations on several routes connecting Nepal with Gulf destinations.
The disruption has affected thousands of passengers, including Nepali migrant workers traveling to and from Gulf countries, as well as tourists and transit travelers.
The Gulf region remains a critical aviation corridor for Nepal’s international connectivity, with a large share of flights linking Kathmandu to major hubs in Doha, Dubai, Sharjah, and Kuwait, which serve as transit points for travelers heading to Europe, Africa, and North America.
Aviation officials say the situation could continue to affect flight schedules depending on regional security developments and airspace availability in the Middle East, a key factor for airlines operating long-haul routes across Asia and Europe.
