KATHMANDU: The number of passengers returning to Nepal from Middle Eastern countries has exceeded those departing from Nepal over the past week, reflecting the disruption in international air travel caused by escalating tensions in the region.
According to data from Tribhuvan International Airport, a total of 3,649 passengers arrived in Nepal from Middle Eastern countries since Falgun 20, while 2,028 passengers departed from Nepal to those destinations during the same period.
Conflict Disrupts Air Travel
The imbalance in passenger flow comes as conflict intensifies in the Middle East following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran in recent weeks, followed by retaliatory actions from Tehran. The ongoing tensions have disrupted aviation operations across the Gulf region, affecting thousands of travelers.
Airlines operating flights between Nepal and Gulf destinations have been forced to adjust schedules as airspace restrictions, security concerns, and operational challenges continue to impact international routes.
Limited Flights Continue
Despite the disruptions, several airlines are still operating limited flights between Nepal and major Middle Eastern transit hubs.
Carriers including Flydubai, Air Arabia, and Himalaya Airlines have been conducting occasional flights to destinations such as:
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah
Airport statistics show that 23 flights were operated to and from these destinations during the period despite the regional instability.
Multiple Flight Cancellations
However, aviation authorities report that the ongoing conflict has also led to significant flight cancellations, with around one and a half dozen flights being cancelled daily on routes connected to the Gulf region.
The cancellations have disrupted travel plans for thousands of migrant workers, tourists, and transit passengers who rely heavily on Middle Eastern aviation hubs for international connectivity.
Officials say the situation remains fluid, and further changes in flight operations will depend on the evolving security conditions in the Middle East.
