Hotel Association Nepal welcomes UN decision on International Wellness Day, Sees tourism growth

KATHMANDU: The declaration of April 15 as International Wellness Day by the United Nations General Assembly, following a proposal from Nepal, is expected to significantly promote health and wellness tourism in the country, according to the Hotel Association Nepal.

In a statement issued by the association, the global recognition of the day is viewed as a strategic opportunity to position Nepal as a key destination in the rapidly expanding global wellness tourism market, which includes activities such as yoga retreats, meditation, Ayurveda treatments, spiritual tourism, and nature-based healing experiences.

The association said the decision would help promote Nepal internationally as an important hub for wellness tourism and holistic travel experiences, potentially strengthening the country’s tourism sector and improving the overall quality of its tourism offerings.

Industry stakeholders believe the recognition could lead to a significant increase in international tourist arrivals to Nepal, while also extending the average length of stay of foreign visitors and raising per-tourist daily spending. Such developments could contribute positively to Nepal’s broader tourism economy, foreign exchange earnings, hospitality industry growth, and sustainable tourism development.

According to the Hotel Association Nepal, the proposal’s approval enhances Nepal’s position in the global tourism marketplace, giving the country an opportunity to establish itself as a leading source destination for wellness tourism.

The association emphasized that with innovative thinking, effective programs, and results-oriented management, Nepal can be developed into a major international wellness tourism hub.

The statement also noted that the recognition would encourage stronger engagement from both national and international stakeholders—including tourism operators, hospitality businesses, wellness practitioners, and global tourism partners—to expand and strengthen initiatives related to wellness travel and health tourism in Nepal.

The Hotel Association Nepal, which has been working in the field of wellness tourism for many years, said it has been collaborating with the Government of Nepal in preparing a strategic concept paper on wellness tourism development.

The association has provided policy suggestions and technical inputs aimed at creating a structured national strategy to promote wellness-based tourism products such as yoga tourism, meditation tourism, spiritual retreats, Himalayan nature therapy, and Ayurveda-based healing tourism.

In line with the newly recognized international observance, the association announced that it will organize special programs every year on April 15 to mark International Wellness Day, promoting the continued development, expansion, and global marketing of wellness tourism in Nepal.

Tourism experts say Nepal’s unique combination of Himalayan landscapes, spiritual heritage, yoga traditions, Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage sites, and natural healing environments gives the country a competitive advantage in the international wellness tourism sector, which has become one of the fastest-growing segments of global travel and sustainable tourism markets.

The global recognition of International Wellness Day is therefore expected to further strengthen Nepal’s branding as a destination for spiritual tourism, meditation retreats, eco-tourism, and holistic wellness travel, supporting long-term growth in the country’s tourism and hospitality industries while contributing to national economic development.
