KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has decided to establish a dedicated immigration desk at Tribhuvan International Airport for Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) and foreign citizens of Nepali origin, in a move aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening diaspora engagement.
The decision was initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs Nepal, which has directed the Department of Immigration Nepal to implement the system through a formal instruction issued to the airport immigration office on Sunday.
Under the new arrangement, individuals of Nepali origin—regardless of their current nationality—will no longer be required to queue in standard foreign passenger lines during arrival or departure. Instead, they will be serviced through a separate, dedicated desk designed to facilitate faster and more personalized immigration processing.
According to the official communication, the initiative aims to deepen emotional and cultural ties between Nepal and its global diaspora, while also encouraging tourism inflows and foreign investment. The government views the Nepali diaspora as a strategic asset in promoting Nepal’s economic diplomacy, cultural outreach, and international connectivity.
The move follows a recent appeal by the Association of Nepali Origin, whose representatives met Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal about a week and a half ago, requesting the establishment of a separate immigration facility.
In their proposal, ANO emphasized that people of Nepali origin—irrespective of where they reside or hold citizenship—maintain deep-rooted emotional, cultural, and ancestral ties to Nepal. They argued that a dedicated desk would symbolize state recognition and provide a more welcoming experience when entering or leaving the country.
Responding to this demand, Minister Aryal approved the provision through a ministerial-level decision, signaling a policy shift toward more inclusive engagement with the global Nepali community.
In a statement, ANO President Dilli Adhikari welcomed the decision, noting that it has made Nepali-origin citizens around the world feel recognized and respected by the state. He expressed confidence that effective implementation of the new desk would significantly contribute to ANO’s broader mission of reconnecting the diaspora with Nepal.
The policy is expected to have broader implications for Nepal’s tourism sector, diaspora investment climate, and international image, particularly as the country seeks to leverage its global community for economic growth and cultural diplomacy.
