Balen Shah appointed Prime Minister; Oath ceremony underway at Shital Niwas

KATHMANDU: Balendra Shah has been appointed Prime Minister by President Ram Chandra Poudel, with preparations underway for the oath-taking ceremony at Shital Niwas.

Shah, a senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, was appointed under Article 76(1) of the Constitution as the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives.

This marks the first time since the promulgation of the Constitution of Nepal 2015 that a Prime Minister has been appointed under this provision, and also the first time a Madhesi-origin leader has assumed the post.

Shah recently resigned as Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, contested the Fagun 21 elections, and became Prime Minister immediately after entering Parliament for the first time. He is scheduled to take the oath of office today, along with members of his cabinet.
