KATHMANDU: A helicopter operated by Mustang Air has gone missing in the eastern side of Langtang region of Dolakha District, raising fresh concerns over aviation safety in Nepal’s mountainous terrain.
According to sources at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the helicopter lost contact at around 1:30 PM local time. Initial reports confirm that five people, including the pilot, were on board.
Mustang Air Managing Director Ronan Lamichhane said communication has not yet been established due to the remote and communication-limited geography of the Langtang area, a popular destination for trekking and Himalayan tourism.
Local administration officials, including Assistant Chief District Officer Dhruva Prasad Adhikari, said coordination is underway with the Nepal Army and Nepal Police units stationed in the upper region to gather further information and initiate search operations.
The incident highlights recurring risks in Nepal’s aviation sector, particularly in high-altitude zones frequently used for rescue, tourism, and logistics flights. Authorities are expected to launch coordinated search and rescue operations as weather and terrain conditions permit.
