KP Sharma Oli to appear via video conferencing, Ramesh Lekhak produced in court in Gen-Z protest case

KATHMANDU: Legal proceedings have moved forward against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, with authorities adopting different court presentation approaches based on their circumstances.

KP Sharma Oli: Virtual Court Appearance Planned

Oli, who was arrested early Saturday from Gundoo, is currently undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Medical evaluations conducted on Saturday evening and Sunday morning advised against moving him due to his health condition.

Acting on medical recommendations, the government attorney’s office is preparing to present Oli before the Kathmandu District Court via video conferencing.

Ramesh Lekhak: Physically Presented in Court

In contrast, Lekhak, who was also arrested on Saturday, has already been physically produced before the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday. The delay in his court appearance was due to the public holiday on Saturday.

Arrests Based on Investigation Report

Both KP Sharma Oli and Ramesh Lekhak were arrested following the findings of an investigation commission formed to probe the suppression of the Gen-Z protests held on Bhadra 23–24.

Heavy Security Deployment

Authorities have deployed a large number of security personnel in and around the Kathmandu District Court and District Police Range Kathmandu to maintain order amid heightened public attention.

Background: Violent Protests and Casualties

The Gen-Z protests escalated into violence, resulting in the deaths of 76 individuals, including three police personnel, and leaving more than 2,400 people seriously injured.

During the unrest, key state infrastructure and locations—including Singha Durbar, Parliament Building Nepal, Supreme Court of Nepal, and Rastrapati Bhawan—suffered damage due to arson, vandalism, looting, and attacks on both public and private property.
