KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has assured Nepal’s private sector that they will no longer need to pay bribes, endure long queues, or face unnecessary detention in the course of doing business.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Monday, Minister Wagle said the government is committed to creating a transparent, business-friendly environment aimed at boosting investment and employment.
“I have not come here to take bribes, nor will I allow others to do so,” Wagle stated. “I am here to steer the economy in a new direction and bring momentum to the country.”
Push for Investment and Economic Revival
The Finance Minister urged the private sector to increase investment and expand job creation, emphasizing that the government sees businesses as partners in economic growth.
“We are your co-travelers. You will not have to pay bribes, stand in long lines, or face detention,” he said, signaling a shift toward simplifying administrative processes and reducing regulatory burdens.
Policy Shift: Fines Over Detention
Wagle also indicated a policy shift in handling financial irregularities. Instead of detaining businesspersons for economic offenses, the government is planning to prioritize financial penalties.
He clarified that while the state aims to support and facilitate the private sector, it expects honesty and compliance in return.
Warning Against Deliberate Misconduct
Despite the conciliatory tone, the minister issued a clear warning against intentional wrongdoing.
“If anyone engages in deliberate financial misconduct, the government will act firmly,” he said, underlining that reforms will not come at the cost of accountability.
The remarks come amid broader government efforts to reform economic governance, improve ease of doing business, and rebuild confidence among investors and entrepreneurs in Nepal’s evolving economic landscape.
