KATHMANDU: The Pokhara Metropolitan City has provided walkie-talkies to its city police to ensure effective communication. According to the metropolitan office, 10 PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular) walkie-talkies operating via GSM have been distributed. These devices were supplied by Itel Network Pvt. Ltd. through a tender process initiated by the Pokhara Metropolitan City.
With the availability of walkie-talkies, communication has significantly improved, said city police officer Purushottam Thapa Magar. “Most of the time we have to be on the field, and earlier we had to rely on mobile phones. Since we received the walkie-talkies, it has become easier to communicate, give instructions, and perform our duties,” he said.
He added that the use of walkie-talkies has enhanced security management. Since the devices operate on Nepal Telecom’s network, there have been no issues related to coverage or distance.
The PoC walkie-talkies, connected to a central control software (Contel), allow both group and individual communication. They also enable recording and playback of conversations, GPS location tracking, and centralized control, making the city police’s work more efficient.
The Abel brand PoC walkie-talkies are officially distributed by Decade International. According to Itel Network Director Binu Bhandari, the devices have received type approval certification from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority and operate using IoT SIMs from Nepal Telecom and Ncell. Each device’s IMEI number is also certified by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.
