Nepal imports nearly 10,000 EVs in first 10 months of FY 2024-25

Electric Vehicles to become pricier as government increases customs and excise duties

KATHMANDU: Nepal has seen a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) imports, with 9,859 four-wheeled EVs, including cars, jeeps, and vans, imported in the first 10 months of the fiscal year 2081/82 (July 2024 to May 2025). According to the Customs Department, these imports, valued at NPR 23.10 billion, reflect growing demand for sustainable transportation in Nepal.

China dominates the EV market, supplying 7,353 units, including nine unassembled vehicles, highlighting its role as Nepal’s primary source of electric mobility. India follows as the second-largest supplier with 2,411 EVs, while smaller numbers of EVs were imported from Indonesia, South Korea, Germany, Malaysia, and the United States. This diverse sourcing underscores Nepal’s increasing integration into the global EV market.

The import boom has significantly boosted government revenue, generating NPR 14.25 billion in customs duties over the 10-month period. This influx aligns with Nepal’s push for eco-friendly transportation, supported by government incentives and growing consumer interest in EVs due to their lower operating costs and environmental benefits.

The rise in EV imports reflects Nepal’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development, particularly in urban areas like Kathmandu, where air pollution remains a concern. However, challenges such as inadequate charging infrastructure and high initial costs continue to hinder broader adoption. Industry experts urge the government to invest in charging stations and offer further incentives to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.

The steady increase in EV imports also signals confidence in Nepal’s economic recovery and its appeal as a market for green technology. As global automakers expand their EV offerings, Nepal is poised to benefit from technological advancements and competitive pricing. With the fiscal year ongoing, stakeholders anticipate further growth in EV imports, potentially reshaping Nepal’s transportation landscape and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
