Stock brokers trade over Rs 4.2 trillion in previous FY, NASA Securities leads

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s stock brokerage industry witnessed a historic surge in trading volume during fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25), with 92 licensed broker companies executing securities transactions worth over NPR 4.212 trillion (NPR 42 kharba 12 arba), according to the official annual trading data published by Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE).

This massive turnover underscores the increasing retail and institutional investor participation in Nepal’s capital market, despite macroeconomic uncertainties. However, the data also exposes a significant performance disparity among brokers, with some dominating trade while others remained nearly inactive.

NASA Securities Tops the Chart with NPR 258 Billion

Broker No. 58, NASA Securities, led the market by facilitating transactions worth over NPR 258 billion, accounting for nearly 6.1% of the total market turnover. The company handled NPR 129 billion each in share sales and purchases, making it the only broker to exceed the NPR 250 billion mark in a single fiscal year.

Bottom Performers Raise Questions on Market Participation

In stark contrast, Moneys World Share Exchange (Broker 73) recorded the lowest trading volume, with only NPR 127.6 million (12.76 crore) in total trades — NPR 55.7 million in sales and NPR 71.9 million in purchases.
Similarly, Pahi Investment reported a low trade volume of NPR 402.2 million, showing a massive gap between top-tier and bottom-tier brokers.

Regulatory Implications and Market Health

The trading volume of over NPR 4.2 trillion in a single year is an all-time high for NEPSE, indicating a growing maturity of the securities market in Nepal. However, the lopsided performance of brokerage firms also highlights inefficiencies and possible regulatory concerns related to broker licensing, compliance, and competitiveness.

With market reforms underway — including digital transformation, tax system reviews, and SEBON’s revised capital adequacy requirements — the spotlight is now on the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) to ensure balanced market participation, raise accountability standards, and enforce performance benchmarks.

Nepal Stock Market Outlook

As investor confidence begins to recover and interest rates remain relatively stable, the fiscal year 2082/83 is expected to bring greater retail engagement, foreign portfolio inflows, and possibly, initial public offerings (IPOs) of major companies in banking, fintech, insurance, and energy sectors.

The exceptional rise in brokerage transactions marks a critical phase for Nepal’s financial market reform, driven by enhanced digital platforms, growing investor literacy, and institutional involvement.
